Animated GIF sizes by platform
Each preset in the resizer matches one of these targets. Where a platform has an upload limit, the result card shows a pass/fail check against it, so you know before you upload.
| Use | Size | Upload limit | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord emoji | 128 × 128 px | 256 KB | Displayed small; 128 px stays sharp on retina screens. |
| Slack custom emoji | 128 × 128 px | 128 KB | Square images work best; the tightest size limit here. |
| Twitch animated emote | 112 × 112 px (+ 56, 28) | 1 MB, 60 frames | Needs bold shapes — detail disappears at 28 px. |
| Avatar / profile picture | 256 or 512 px square | Varies | Platforms crop to a circle; keep the subject centered. |
| Thumbnail | 320 px wide | — | Height follows the original aspect ratio. |
| HTML email | 600 px wide | — | Email clients show only the first frame in some versions of Outlook. |
| GitHub README, docs | 800 px wide | — | Smaller files load faster in the rendered page. |
Platform limits change from time to time — if an upload is refused, check the platform’s help page for its current limit.
Fit, Fill or Stretch: getting any GIF into a square
Emoji, emotes and avatars are square, but most GIFs are not. When the target shape differs from your GIF, the resizer asks how to handle it:
Fit — keep everything
The whole animation is scaled to fit inside the square, and the leftover space is padded with transparency (or a color you pick). Best for emoji and emotes, where cutting off part of the action would lose the joke.
Fill — no empty space
The GIF is scaled until the square is covered, then trimmed evenly from the center. Best for avatars and thumbnails, where empty bars look odd.
Stretch — exact, but distorted
The GIF is forced to the exact width and height. Useful only when the source is almost the right shape already.
When the GIF is still over the size limit
- Reduce colors. Set Colors per frame to 64 or 32. Emoji are small and rarely need 256 colors.
- Use Pixel art resampling for flat, cartoon-style or pixel-art GIFs — it adds no in-between colors, which compresses far better.
- Start from a shorter clip. File size grows with every frame; a 2-second loop fits limits much more easily than a 6-second one.

Animated GIF resizer: questions
What size should a Discord animated emoji be?
Upload it as a 128 × 128 px GIF under 256 KB. Discord shows emoji much smaller, but 128 px keeps them sharp on high-density screens. Choose the Discord emoji preset and the result tells you whether the file fits under 256 KB.
Why does Slack reject my GIF emoji?
Almost always because the file is too large — Slack custom emoji must be under 128 KB. Resize to 128 × 128 with the Slack emoji preset; if it is still over, switch Colors per frame to 64 or 32, which the result card offers as a one-tap fix.
How do I turn a GIF into a Twitch animated emote?
Twitch asks for 112 × 112 px, and can also take 56 × 56 and 28 × 28 versions, at up to 1 MB and 60 frames. Resize with the Twitch emote 112 preset first, then run the 56 and 28 presets on the same GIF if you want to upload each size yourself.
My GIF is wide — how do I get it into a square without squashing it?
Pick a square preset and choose Fit to keep the whole animation with transparent padding above and below, or Fill to zoom in and crop the sides. Stretch forces it into the square and distorts it, which is rarely what you want for emoji.
Can I make a round avatar GIF?
Most platforms crop avatars into a circle themselves, so upload a square. Use an Avatar preset with Fill and keep the subject near the center — the corners will be hidden by the platform.
Will a tiny 28 px emote still be animated?
Yes. Every frame and delay is kept at any size. Very small sizes lose detail, so emotes read best with bold shapes and high contrast; for pixel-art emotes, use Pixel art resampling to keep edges crisp.
